Henry Peach Robinson lived and worked in Royal Leamington Spa from 1853 to 1864, and made Fading Away at his premises there.
The exhibition Fading Away – Henry Peach Robinson Revisited celebrated that by showing a selection of his work loaned from NMPFT, Bradford and Tunbridge Wells Museum & Art Gallery alongside new works by Sayers and Lundgreen.
The juxtaposition of historic and new works introduced a contemporary perspective and an additional element of uncertainty and duplicity. This was reinforced by a video installation designed to interrogate the artifice beneath the still surface of the reconstructed photograph, as well as an adjacent display of artefacts used in the reconstruction (costumes, props, etc.) strategically presented among legitimate historical items in a specially-constructed ‘interpretation’ space.
